The TECH-Prep Course: The Technology Early Career Preparation Intervention project

The TECH-Prep course is a virtual 10 to 12-week class for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to explore tech-related careers. Students meet in real time to interact with an instructor and their peers in the course. 

What Can Students Expect to Know by the End of the Class? 

  • Important professional skills expected of employees in the workforce
  • Different tech-related jobs they may pursue after existing high school
  • Postsecondary credentials, degrees, certificates or experience needed jobs in tech-related fields.
  • The steps to finding and securing a job, and the skills needed to keep a job.

What Skills do Students in TECH-prep Learn? 

In addition to exploring technology, students in TECH-Prep learn a number of professionalism skills, including:

  • Effective communication at work 
  • Appropriate attitudes and impressions in the workplace 
  • How to work as a team
  • How to manage work stressors or barriers on-the-job
  • How to socialize with others in the workplace 
  • Ways to network with others 

How Do They Learn These Skills? 

TECH-Prep students learn these skills by engaging in a number of different types of course activities:

  • Role-playing 
  • Journaling 
  • Discussions
  • Videos and Speakers
  • Lesson Activities and Exercises 
  • Quizzes 
  • Feedback
