Background:  Opioid abuse has become an epidemic in the United States, one that includes emergency room visits, premature death, HIV, hepatitis, crime, loss of workdays, and economic costs.
Purpose:  The author presents the challenges of accessing treatment for opioid abuse and dependence in rural America, as well as future directions for growth.
