Emily Ross, the WIPA Program Manager for Disability Rights Oregon’s Plan for Work program, embodies the spirit of perseverance and the transformative power of self-advocacy. Diagnosed with Aniridia, a rare eye disorder characterized by the absence of the iris, at just two months old, Emily faced challenges from the start. Yet, with the unwavering support of her parents, she learned early on that there was nothing she couldn't accomplish, even if it required more time or creativity.
Growing up, Emily's determination became her defining trait. Her mantra, “Emily, do by self,” was a source of strength, though it also led to challenges in asking for help. Over time, she learned that seeking assistance wasn’t a weakness but an opportunity to make the path smoother. This realization would become pivotal in her life, particularly when she faced significant health struggles in her career.
After working for the State of Oregon in the late '90s, Emily encountered severe headaches and eye strain due to the nature of office work and outdated computer technology. Despite excelling at her job, the physical toll became unbearable, leading her to a crossroads. Following deep reflection, she made a bold decision to change careers, pursuing massage therapy—a field that allowed her to work in a low-light, less technology-dependent environment. For 17 years, she thrived as a self-employed massage therapist, meeting new people, alleviating their pain, and finding joy in her work.
However, financial instability, particularly the lack of medical insurance, was a constant concern. Emily reached out to Social Security in the mid-2000s, only to find out she earned too much to qualify for benefits, a decision that left her feeling discouraged. Years later, in 2010, after facing an economic downturn and struggling to make ends meet, she finally acknowledged her need for support. This pivotal moment of embracing her disability led her to apply and begin receiving Social Security benefits.
Emily's journey took another turn in 2015 when she felt ready for a new challenge. She sought Vocational Rehabilitation services through the Oregon Commission for the Blind, which led to a job opportunity with Disability Rights Oregon. Beginning as a WIPA Intake Specialist in 2017, Emily quickly realized the profound impact she could have on others, helping beneficiaries navigate their benefits while finding financial stability and independence.
Her passion for the work and her deep empathy for those she served made her a natural fit for the role of Community Work Incentives Coordinator (CWIC). By 2017, she had worked herself off Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and fully embraced her new role, where she thrived on solving complex cases and empowering beneficiaries to pursue their dreams without fear of losing their safety net.
In 2022, Emily’s dedication and growth led her to the role of WIPA Program Manager, fulfilling a vision she had half-jokingly set for herself during her job interview five years earlier. Today, Emily continues to lead with empathy, helping others overcome their challenges just as she did.
Her story is not only one of professional success but also of personal fulfillment. Outside of work, Emily is a lover of dogs and Legos. She lives with her two dogs, Maeve and Cooper, who bring joy and "sweet trouble" into her life. Her creativity shines through her love of LEGOs, which she uses to decorate her home and even create mosaics of dog pictures.
Through every challenge, Emily has exemplified resilience, learning to balance independence with the strength of community and support. She now shares her hard-earned lessons with others, ensuring that no one else must go through their struggles alone.
